Topstep Review (2026)
One of the oldest names in futures funding, with some of the most by-the-book rules. Topstep only offers end-of-day drawdown, so you can't fall into the intraday trap, but you pay every month until you pass.

Verdict: Topstep is the "steady, by-the-book" choice. The end-of-day loss limit is forgiving, the rules are clear, there's no deadline, and the firm has been around since 2012. You pay a monthly subscription until you pass plus an activation fee on the cheapest path, and the best-day consistency rule can push your real target above the stated one. Best for newer traders who want structure over speed.

My experience with Topstep
Trading Combine rules in 2026
| Account | Profit target | Max loss limit (EOD trailing) | Daily loss limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50K | $3,000 | $2,000 | Optional, $1,000 |
| $100K | $6,000 | $3,000 | Optional, $2,000 |
| $150K | $9,000 | $4,500 | Optional, $3,000 |
- Max loss limit trails your end-of-day balance and stops trailing once it reaches your starting balance. Touch it and the Combine ends.
- Consistency rule: your best day can be at most about 55% of your total profit.
- No time limit to pass.
- Profit split: 90/10 for traders who joined from January 12, 2026.
How the best-day rule changes your target
On a 50K Combine, the target is $3,000. If your best day is $2,000, the 55% rule means you need $2,000 ÷ 0.55 ≈ $3,640 in total. A big day early on effectively raises your target. That's why many traders cap their daily profit while in the Combine: aim for steady days well under half your target.
What getting funded costs
Topstep's Standard path for a 50K is $49/month, plus a $149 activation fee each time you earn an Express Funded Account. The No Activation Fee path skips that fee but costs more per month. At my overall pass rate of roughly one in three:
| Scenario (50K, Standard) | Subscription | Activation | Real cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pass in month one | $49 | $149 | $198 |
| Pass in month two | $98 | $149 | $247 |
| 3 attempts, 2 months each | $294 | $149 | ~$443 |
The monthly model rewards fast passes and punishes slow ones. No deadline sounds generous, but every extra month costs you.
Getting paid: the Express Funded Account
After you pass, you trade an Express Funded Account (XFA); one review reports you can hold up to five at once. Two payout paths are reported:
- Standard path: 5 winning days of $150 or more before each payout.
- Consistency path: 3 trading days, with your best day kept within 40% of your profit.
Each request is limited to 50% of your balance, with dollar caps reported since April 28, 2026 at $2,000 (Standard) or $3,000 (Consistency) on a 50K, up to $5,000/$6,000 on a 150K. The minimum request is $125. If you move up to a Live Funded Account, the dollar cap goes away, though each request stays at 50% of balance until you log 30 winning days.
Platforms and news rules
- Platform: Topstep's own TopstepX. One source says it can't connect to TradingView, so check before buying if you trade from TradingView charts.
- News: you can trade news, but not with your full maximum position into a major scheduled release.
- Bots: reports conflict; some say automation is allowed on Combine and Express accounts via API but not on Live. (Firms that allow bots.)
Pros and cons
Pros
- End-of-day trailing only, so no intraday trap
- Long track record (since 2012)
- No deadline to pass
- Clear, well-documented rules
- Path to a Live account with no dollar payout cap
Cons
- Monthly subscription: slow passes get expensive
- $149 activation fee on the cheapest path
- ~55% best-day rule during the Combine
- Payout caps per request on Express accounts
- TradingView support limited
Who Topstep is for
A good fit: newer futures traders who want forgiving drawdown, no deadline and clear rules, and who trade steady daily P&L.
Not a good fit: traders who want a one-time fee, who trade from TradingView, or who make most of their profit on a few big days.
FAQ
Has Topstep paid you?
Not yet. I've bought Topstep Combines, and this review is based on its rules and my time in the Combine. The firms that have paid me are FTMO, Lucid Trading and Crypto Fund Trader.
How much does Topstep really cost?
On the 50K Standard path: $49/month until you pass, plus $149 to activate your funded account. Passing in month one costs $198; slower passes and failed attempts add up.
What is Topstep's consistency rule?
During the Combine, your best day can be at most about 55% of your total profit. A big day raises the total you need. For example, a $2,000 best day means you need about $3,640 on a 50K.
Is Topstep's drawdown trailing?
Yes, end-of-day trailing. It moves with your closing balance and stops at your starting balance. There's no intraday trailing option.
Can I use TradingView with Topstep?
Support is limited: one source says TopstepX can't connect to TradingView. If you trade from TradingView, firms with Tradovate accounts, like Lucid, are easier.
